Ngapali Beach

Amid breathtaking scenery of palms and banana groves, with a continuous sea front extending over 3 km (two miles), Myanmar Ngapali Beach has fast become a magnet to European tourists and holiday makers. In natural setting it is reputedly superior to Maimi or Waikiki before. Among all Myanmar beaches, Ngapali Beach is the most developed and most popular of Myanmar beaches with everything from modern five-star resort hotels to bungalows for "backpack" tourists. The Ngapali beach has a long history since British time in Myanmar (Burma). Ngapali is not a Burmese name and is believed to have been originated by early Italian travelers who compared Ngapali beach with their own seaside resort of Naples. Burmese name does have a meaning of its own "cajoling Fish" roughly. So the meaning has been grafted to the Burmese pronunciation.

Ngapali is located at the Coast of Arakan (Rakhine state) fully white sand with full of palms trees all along the coast of 3km long. Ngapali area is a good place to relax and take a break from the rigours of Myanmar road travel. Very quiet and pleasant time you will have if you decided to visit the Ngapali Beach Myanmar.

Ngapali Beach is about 45 minutes to one hour fly from Yangon. There are three local flight company and government own (MA) flight flying to Ngapali Beach every day in high season. September to April is call high season in Myanmar for tourist. Air Bagan newly introduce to the country for both local and foreign visitors are one of the airlines flying to Ngapali beach from main tourist sport like Bagan and Mandalay. Other airlines are Air Mandalay(AM) and Yangon Air (YA) flies to Thandwe Airport too. They both have been running domestically since 1996 visit Myanmar year. During low season (from May to mid-September), there is only one airline ( Air Mandalay ) flying three time a week from Yangon to Ngapali beach. So you need to be sure which day you are flying as flight is not everyday. The three day are Monday , Wednesday and Saturday. The price is around 60 US$ for foreigner and 65000 kyats(Myanmar money) for local. Local tourists prefer to go by bus as it is cheaper and they have time. Booking through the travel agent in Yangon is cheaper then booking direct to the airline.

Once you arrive at Ngapali airport, you will be greeted by the touts from each of the hotels. It seems that every hotel provides the transport to their hotel. It takes about 15 to the closest resort to up to 60 minutes for hotels at the end of the beach, depending on where you stay. Even thought the trip to the hotel is free, it really isn't. You should book in advance to ensure that your accommodations are what you want vs. taking the "free" ride to a hotel that you don't want.

You can find both budget hotels like Linthar Oo hotel to 5 star Amata Resort & spa hotel just newly opened. There are many beach resorts available for tourist. Amazing Ngapali Resort is located closet to the Thandwe airport and takes only five minutes drive not far from the golf course. Bungalows type sea view rooms and full facilities of services. Next to Amazing Ngapali is Silver Beach Hotel opened in 1996, sit in the shaded compound along the beach. Enjoying the sunset on the veranda is a good idea. They have both sea view and the garden view rooms. Bayview Hotel Resort is Burmese-German venture with large air-con rooms. Quiet and shaded varandas, hot-water showers, restaurant serve specializing in seafood and pizzas. Lin Tha Oo Lodge is Budget bungalows and cheapest in this area, all wooden floor bungalows with common bathroom and cold shower with small veranda. Superior bungalows have air con, hot water and satellite TV.

Jade Mariana, Thande Beach Hotel is near Zee Phyu Gone Village and the Junction to Thandwe all have sea view bungalows with own gardens, Aureum Palace Resort & Spa is one of the best luxury hotel, Ngapali Beach hotel is the first hotel in Ngapali build by Steel brothers Company in 1961 know as strand hotel Ngapali before and all sea view bungalows with modern equipment, Tamarind Beach Hotel is small and give you best servie, Sandoway Resort is Burmese-Italian joint venture with both private sea sea view villas and cottage two storeys building luxurious resort, Amata resort & spa is design by State of Art New York architectural firm two storey swish complex giving you pleasure, Laguna lodge Ngapali is smallest accommodation in the quiet bungalow with four rooms upstairs and bar downstairs facing sea view and Royal Beach Motel is excellent on the south end near to the fishing village are all lying next to each other in Ngapali Beach. Some budget hotels in Nagapli beach are Linthar Oo and Royal Beach. You can pay 15 to 20 $ per rooms at those hotels. Some new hotels like Pleasant View Resort Hotel are opening soon too. Going to Ngapali Beach by car is not a good idea as it takes 18 hours bus ride and bumpy road. But if you like to explore the nature of Myanmar Arakan roma's mountain road it is not bad too. Sometime you will see wild elephant on the road to Ngapali Beach by bus if you are lucky.

There are 12 restaurants around Ngapali beach area. If you like to enjoy having sea food at Ngapali Beach then you can go to either hotel restaurants like Linghar Oo lodge restaurant or royal Rakhine traditional food at Royal Beach Motel. Dolphin Restaurant can serve you the best sea food local style. Best Friends restaurant and Excellence can introduce you Chinese taste. Sunshine restaurant, Smile Restaurant, Moon light Restaurant are just located next to each other and give you both local and Chinese food. Two Brothers is another choice to enjoy for your lunch. Hotel restaurants serve both European and Chinese Food. There is one island restaurant called BBQ to view the nice sunset by having the best fresh seafood.

There are many fishing villages near by the beach and you can see the real Myanmar fisherman. You will see villager sun dry fish, shrimps and coconut on cane mats spread over the sand, see women carrying bucket of dried fish during low tide. You can go to fish Market at Jatetaw and Lonthar Villages. The fishermen normally go out in the evening and coming back every morning. They catch all types of sea fishes depend on the way they catch. Baby trawler will catch all type of small fishes and dry in the morning sun. You will also see fisherman coming back carrying big barracuda, eel, cat fish, shark, snapper and groper at daytime. Catching shark is prohibited in other country but you will see Myanmar fisherman catching Big Shark. It is easy for some people who are interested in fishing how they go out to fish in the evening and come back in the morning with full of fishes on their fishing boat.

If you enjoy riding on the ox cart along the coast your guide at the beach or hotel can arrange it for you. Amata hotel provide windsurfing for guest to enjoy during their stay. Visiting the fishing villages is fun to explore how the people live. You can also boat around near by island and do snorkeling in the blue crystal water full of unspoiled coral reef. The boat one day cost 15000 kyats to 20000 kyats for two persons. You can do only snorkeling alone and it is cheaper. Surfing is possible during the monsoon season (mid may through to mid September). Tour with a bicycle you can tour several of the villages of ngapali and lontha both supported by the area's bounteous harvest of fish, coconuts and rice. If you are interested on golfing it is possible to do at 9 holes golf club in Ngapali Beach.
